Context

Wouter Torfs, CEO of Schoenen Torfs: “It is easy to say that things aren’t going well in the world. Poverty, peaking CO2 emissions, child mortality... but it is a lot more difficult to really try and do something about it. I personally believe that as a company you can make a difference by becoming engaged in social and ecological challenges.”

Schoenen Torfs has already proven this engagement by its partnerships with social and ecological organisations such as Cunina and Natuurpunt. Now the company asked Futureproofed to assist them in tackling their CO2 emissions!

Challenge

Making a carbon footprint is the starting point to reduce CO2 emissions in an effective, affordable, attractive and cost-effective way. So the first step is to obtain an accurate picture of both direct and indirect emissions of the activities of Schoenen Torfs. To achieve this we had to calculate the scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint of this PME with over 500 employees and 62 stores.

What we did

We stepped into Schoenen Torfs’ shoes and collected and calculated all necessary data to complete a scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint, according to the Bilan carbon method.

Making a carbon footprint and identifying reduction options only makes real sense if the employees and stakeholders get involved. So at the annual staff days of Torfs at the Antwerp Zoo we raised awareness with all employees with our interactive and entertaining Futureproofed climate quiz.

The result

The clear and non-intuitive list of all (sometimes surprising) carbon emissions allows us to “choose battles”and is important to prepare us for the next phase, due at the beginning of 2011. In this phase we will map and prioritize all possible CO2 emission reduction opportunities.
